InBody Scan: What Is It and Why Do I Need It?
Here at Chamber’s Clinic, we offer a segmental analysis of your body that displays your percent body fat, your body fat mass, your dry lean body mass (including bones and skeletal muscle) as well as just your skeletal muscle mass, and your extracellular and intracellular water weight. The scan also can tell you your visceral fat score.
Visceral fat is the fat that surrounds your internal organs in your abdominal region. This is very important, because it can show if you are at risk for something called metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a term used to describe someone who has high blood pressure, high cholesterol, (pre)diabetic, and generally have higher waist circumference (more than 35 inches in women and more than 40 inches in men). Now, having a smaller waist circumference doesn’t always let you know if you’re at a decreased risk. There is phenomenon called TOFI, which stands for “thin outside, fat inside,” which highlights a person who isn’t necessarily overweight or big, but their body is still storing a lot of visceral fat. The InBody is a fairly accurate scan, which has a 95% accuracy score compared to a DEXA body composition scan, which is the gold standard for body composition analysis.
At Chamber’s Clinic, we usually include this scan with all new patient visits, and with visits monitoring weight loss (especially to determine if you’re losing fat while retaining muscle mass). But the InBody can be used for more than just tracking weight and muscle mass compared to body fat. It can be used to see if you’re overtraining one limb (arm or leg) over the other side, it can be used to see if there is muscle impairment in patients with COPD or patients who are on statins that are at risk for rhabdomyolysis, and it can be used for those with end-stage kidney disease or those who may be developing congestive heart failure to determine if they are gaining water weight from kidney or heart impairment.
Given the versatility and helpful information that this scan gives, make sure you get them done often to keep track of your health. Talk to your Chambers Clinic provider today about how you can use InBody to better assess your health and manage your goals.
