Is GLP-1 Right for Me?

GLP-1 medications can be a meaningful tool — but they aren’t right for everyone, and they aren’t the only path. This guide isn’t a substitute for a clinical consultation, but it can help you arrive at one with clearer questions.

GLP-1 Therapy May Be Worth Discussing If

  • You’ve made repeated, sincere attempts at weight loss through nutrition and exercise without lasting results.
  • You have a BMI in a range where medical weight management is clinically indicated, or a related health condition like type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, or PCOS.
  • Hunger, cravings, or constant food preoccupation feel like a barrier you can’t think your way past.
  • You’re ready to pair medication with sustained changes in nutrition, movement, and follow-up care.

GLP-1 Therapy Is Probably Not the Right Fit If

  • You have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2 syndrome.
  • You have a history of pancreatitis or active significant gastrointestinal disease.
  • You are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • You’re looking for a short-term aesthetic outcome and aren’t interested in the broader metabolic and lifestyle picture.

Questions Worth Asking Your Clinician

  • Based on my history and labs, am I a clinical candidate?
  • Which medication makes more sense for me, and why?
  • What side effects should I watch for, and what’s the plan if they show up?
  • How will we measure progress beyond the scale?
  • How long do you anticipate I’d be on therapy, and what does coming off look like?

What to Expect From the Conversation

A responsible consultation isn’t a sales pitch. Your clinician should be willing to tell you if GLP-1 therapy isn’t a good fit — and to walk through what would be. The goal is the right plan for you, not the most popular one.
