Recovery from a viral illness is not just about clearing the infection—it is about supporting the body as it restores energy, balance, and resilience

Most viral illnesses resolve within days, but the recovery process often continues much longer. Fatigue, reduced stamina, brain fog, and respiratory symptoms reflect that the body is working to restore balance. Research shows that viral infections can temporarily impair mitochondrial function, reduce cellular energy production, and alter immune regulation, contributing to prolonged fatigue and delayed recovery. Supporting the body appropriately during each phase of illness can improve recovery and help restore energy more quickly and completely.

How to Support Your Body’s Natural Healing

Over the years, both in my medical practice and in caring for my own children, I’ve come to appreciate that recovery from a viral illness is not just about fighting the infection—it is about restoring energy, resilience, and balance in the body afterward.

In the early phase of illness, the immune system becomes highly active, using significant energy to identify and eliminate the virus. Fatigue during this phase is not a sign of weakness—it is a protective and intelligent response that allows the body to redirect energy toward healing.

Even after the infection has passed, the body may still be depleted. Viral illnesses temporarily affect mitochondrial function, which reduces the body’s ability to produce energy efficiently.² This is why people often experience lingering fatigue, reduced stamina, or a sense that their energy has not fully returned.

Some of the therapies I rely on most are also the simplest. I often recommend bone broth—not only because it provides amino acids and minerals that support tissue repair and recovery—but because it is warm, grounding, and deeply nourishing. Warm fluids support circulation and digestion, and there is something profoundly supportive about giving the body nourishment in a form that is easy to receive.

Herbal teas are also a cornerstone. Plants such as ginger, lemon balm, nettle, and tulsi offer gentle physiological support for the immune and nervous systems. Beyond their biochemical effects, warm teas help shift the nervous system into a calmer, more restorative state, which supports healing. I have seen repeatedly—in my patients and in my own family—that when the body is supported with warmth, nourishment, and rest, recovery happens more smoothly.

Another simple but powerful supportive therapy is hydrotherapy, including steam inhalation.  It improves circulation, supports respiratory healing, and helps regulate the nervous system, creating conditions that allow the body to recover more efficiently.

Finally, mitochondrial nutrients such as CoQ10, magnesium, and NAD precursors may help restore cellular energy production and may improve fatigue and mitochondrial function.¹,³,

Let’s break down each phase and discuss how to support your own body’s healing process. 


Phase 1: Early Infection (First 1–7 Days)

• Vitamin C: 1000–2000 mg, 2–3 times daily
• Zinc: 15–30 mg daily (short-term use during acute illness)
• Vitamin D: 5,000–10,000 IU daily
• NAC (N-acetyl cysteine): 600–900 mg, 1–2 times daily

Supportive Recovery Practices

• Bone broth: 1–2 cups daily
• Herbal teas such as ginger, lemon balm, or tulsi
• Warm showers or baths
• Prioritize sleep and rest

Botanical Support for the Early Immune Response

In the early phase of viral illness, certain botanical medicines can help support the body’s immune response and reduce viral activity. As the body transitions into recovery, the focus shifts toward restoring energy and balance rather than stimulating immune activity.

Echinacea – supports immune cell activation and helps the body respond efficiently to infection. Clinical studies suggest echinacea may modestly reduce the duration and severity of upper respiratory infections.⁵
Elderberry – may reduce the severity and duration of viral respiratory symptoms.⁶
Garlic and onion – contain natural antiviral and immune-supportive compounds and can be incorporated into meals or broths
Goldenseal – contains antimicrobial compounds and is sometimes used short-term during acute infection

These botanicals can be used in forms that feel most supportive and accessible, including teas, added to bone broth or food, or taken as tinctures or capsules. 

In Practice: A simple immune-supportive tea can be made using elderberry, fresh ginger, and lemon balm. These herbs work together to support the immune response while providing warmth and hydration, both of which support recovery.

If symptoms are severe, worsening, or not improving as expected, it is important to consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance.


Phase 2: Transition and Early Recovery (Week 2–4)

• Medicinal mushrooms (cordyceps or mushroom blend such as Stamets 7): 1–3 grams daily
• Vitamin D: continue 2000–5000 IU daily

Supportive Recovery Practices

• Contrast showers 1-2x daily if tolerated

• Gentle walking and stretching
• Adequate rest between activities

• Ginger – improves circulation and supports recovery
• Nettle – provides mineral-rich nourishment to support energy restoration

These herbs are especially supportive when used in tea form, providing both physiological and calming nervous system benefits.


Phase 3: Full Recovery and Energy Restoration 

(Weeks 4–12+)

If fatigue persists beyond the initial recovery period, working with your healthcare provider can help ensure there are no underlying factors contributing to delayed recovery. At this stage, additional support for the mitochondria and nervous system may be recommended to help restore full energy and resilience.

How to Practice:

Get into your favorite shower and first, simply enjoy the water falling on you, then alternate warm and cold water as follows: 

• Warm water for 2–3 minutes
• Cold water for 30 seconds
• Very warm water for 1–2 minutes
• W for 30 seconds
• Repeat daily or as tolerated

Steam Inhalation for Respiratory Support

Steam inhalation helps hydrate respiratory tissues, improve mucus clearance, and support respiratory healing.

How to Apply This Therapy:

How to Practice:
• Fill a bowl with hot water
• Allow the water to cool slightly so the steam is comfortably warm, not hot enough to cause burns
• Lean over the bowl and breathe slowly and deeply for 5–10 minutes
• If you choose, you may drape a small towel over your head and the bowl to create a gentle tent that helps contain the steam
• Optional: add 1–2 drops of eucalyptus or thyme essential oil
• Repeat once or twice daily as needed

Preparing Herbal Tea for Nourishment and Recovery

Simple Steps:

• Bring water to a boil
• Pour 6–8 oz of hot water over the tea or herbs
• Cover and let steep for 10–15 minutes to preserve beneficial plant compounds
• Allow the tea to cool to a comfortable temperature before drinking


Recovery is a gradual process, and supporting the body with nourishment, rest, and appropriate therapies helps restore full energy and resilience. With thoughtful care, most people return to their normal strength and vitality over time.
